High-volume supermarkets and unmanned sites often run on lower margins, followed by competitive urban independents. Full-service and motorway sites often cost more. Why motorway sites cost more
They face concession, access, staffing and round-the-clock operating costs, while drivers have fewer nearby alternatives. The gap is not constant. On a long trip, compare an exit close to the route with the next on-motorway option and include the distance needed to leave and rejoin.
